Editor’s comment: Westwood’s support shows his love for home town

The campaign to save Worksop Town FC received a welcome boost this week with news that the town’s favourite son has pledged his support.

Lee Westwood’s decision to sponsor Tigers’ shirts next season is both very generous and a demonstration of the love he still holds for his home town.

It is also a powerful indication of how wide the campaign to save Tigers has gone that the former world number one golfer has agreed to get involved in such a fitting way - by displaying the logo for his golf school on shirts next season.

Here at the Guardian we have been at the forefront of ongoing efforts to secure Tigers’ future since owner Jason Clark announced he was walking away earlier this summer.

We have been humbled by the response of people in the town and amazed by the fundraising efforts of the supporters who are keeping their club afloat at this most difficult moment in its long and proud history.

Lee’s involvement can only help to make sure this tumultuous period for Tigers has a happy ending.

Also this week we have been overwhelmed by the response to our story about well known taxi proprietor Kevin Allen who passed away aged just 52.

Kevin, known to his friends as ‘the Bear’ is clearly fondly remembered by people in the town for his sense of humour and larger than life personality.

The story was the most popular on our website as the Guardian went to press on Thursday - two days after it was published online.

While dozens of comments paying tribute to Kevin were left on our Facebook page.

It is a sign that individuals who aren’t politicians, sports stars or celebrities can still have an enormous impact on the communities where they live.
