The political establishment in this country just don’t get it, do they?
They’ve been left with a bloody nose by UKIP in the local and European elections, yet they just continue to bury their heads in the sand.
UKIPs success is not so much a validation of that party’s politicians or policies, as it is an indictment of the three main political parties.
It was a protest vote.
People are frustrated by the status quo, people are sick of the sleaze and spin of the Westminster establishment.
And yet it goes on. Just this week we have had all the revelations of the underhand tactics being used in the power struggle at the top of the Liberal Democrats.
The poor turnout at last week’s elections is just as telling.
The vast majority of people are no longer engaged by politics, and it is largely the politicians who are to blame.
There was a time when there great characters in British politics, politicians who had the common touch and with whom ordinary people could identify.
Now it is all about stage management and spin. It is cynical politics and an ever growing number of people are seeing right through it.
Let’s hope the events of the last week serve as a wake up call.
