Drink drive mum feared for kids

A mum-of-three drove while over the limit in the early hours of New Year's Day in Mansfield because she feared her children were at risk from an ex-partner, a court has heard.

Victoria Clarke, 32, of Bonnington Road, Mansfiled, admitted failing a breath test which recorded 89 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Police spotted her Ford Fiesta driving erratically on Skegby Road after leaving the Sir John Cockle pub without headlights just after midnight on January 1.

Yvonne Wragg, mitigating, told the court Mrs Clarke had suffered ‘a very troubled breakdown’ with the ex-partner which resulted in the police helicopter being called out on New Year’s Eve 2014.

Ms Wragg said Mrs Clarke’s new partner had received text threats from her ex and she was afraid that a similar situation was about to happen one year later.

Her current partner received a text from her former partner informing him she had been arrested. Mrs Wragg said: “It is questionable where the ex-partner was at this time.”

The court heard Mrs Clarke had been working as a care assistant but had been laid off since the incident because she needed to drive to get to work.

Magistrates banned her from driving for 22 months, fined her £120 and ordered her to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
