Wendy Byrne won the cash when she appeared on the National Lottery’s In It To Win It programme in January.

And after helping out family and friends with her windfall, her thoughts turned to Thornberry Animal Sanctuary.

“I applied to go on the show three years ago because I wanted to take my mum on the Orient Express,” said Wendy.

“But she is not too well now, so we couldn’t do that. My daughter is having a baby in May and my son is at university, so the money will go to help them out.”

“The I thought it would be nice to donate some money to a local charity.”

Wendy had got her cat from Thornberry around four years and wanted to help them out, as well as raising their profile.

“I know what fantastic work they do here and wanted to give something back,” said Wendy.

“I don’t think charities like this get as much attention and donations as some others do.”

Despite the show airing on the BBC last month, Wendy actually recorded the show back in November.

And it was an animal themed question which led Wendy to a share of the £65,000 prize.

“It was fantastic being on the show. I shared the £65,000 with another contestant,” said Wendy.

“The question I had to answer was ‘what animal was Napoleon in Animal Farm? A horse, bull or a pig’. I knew it wasn’t a bull. I made an educated guess and fortunately got the right answer.”

“After the show I had a cup of tea in the green room and I was just in shock. You don’t think things like this happen to people like us.”

Julie Brown from Thornberry was over the moon with the donation.

“It is fantastic to get this very generous donation. We’ve not had anything like this happen before,” she said.

“It may go towards helping with our vets bills as our cats and two puppies are having courses of treatment at the moment.”
