Dinnington: Sports stars at Wales High School recognised for outstanding achievements

Sporting stars at Wales High School have been recognised for their outstanding achievements at an annual awards ceremony.

The Annual Sports Awards, now in its 11th year, was held last week and celebrated the fantastic performances of both individuals and teams.

And it was an extra-special evening for the youngsters, parents and staff as boxing Olympian, Natasha Jonas, attended the event.

A spokesperson for the school said: “The past year has seen the number of students involved in sport increase again.”

“This combined with a number of fantastic performances both for individuals and teams have meant Wales High School PE department is celebrating its most successful year.”

“At the heart of the department’s success are a wonderful and talented set of students from year seven to year 13 and a dedicated team of staff from PE and other departments in school.”

“Natasha gave an extremely motivational speech during the event.”

On the night, Levi Owen was presented with The Jim White Trophy for Cricket, with Elliot Barnard taking the Junior Sportsman and Sophie Ibbertson collecting the Junior Sportswoman accolade. Joe Cannings was recognised as the Senior Sportsman and Chloe Sansford the Senior Sportswoman.

Head of physical education at the school, Dan Riches, said: “Well done to all involved, an excellent evening of celebrations.”

The sporting achievements at the school follow a successful batch of GCSE results that were announced in the summer.

Pupils achieved the school’s best ever GCSE results for English and grades for maths were also above the national average.
