BSkyB, the UK’s leading home entertainment and communications company, has bought 48 lone worker devices from Connexion2, whose UK head office is in Dinnington.

Connexion2 was established in 2003 with the aim of improving the safety and the productivity of lone workers.

It was founded by Managing Director, Craig Swallow, after he attended a Suzy Lamplugh Trust event in 2002 and the idea for Identicom came to him.

The Identicom device is uniquely styled as an identity badge, making it easy to wear and discreet to use , which enables a worker to raise an alarm if experiencing verbal abuse, physical attack or if they have fallen ill.

BSkyB are upgrading to a newer version of the product which can also capture verbal abuse through a two way audio system, has GPS tracking to locate a lone worker and has automatic detection if a worker trips or falls.

BSkyB originally started using an earlier version of the device in 2010 .

Engineers voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Identicom product over the other lone worker devices the company had trialled.

Robert Gathergood, head of access implementation at BSkyB, said: “BSkyB takes the health and safety of its employees very seriously.”

“After being provided with excellent customer service through the SoloProtect solution over the last three years, we have now taken the decision to update our devices.”

“Identicom has helped our staff feel safer, it gives them confidence to know that they could quickly raise an alarm if their safety was ever compromised.”

“We also like the added functionality of the new device, which can detect if a staff member trips or falls, and our team find it discreet and easy to use.”

Identicom remains the most widely used lone worker device in the UK.

And it was named as the Most Innovative Product of the Year at the CIR Business Continuity Awards earlier this year.

Connexion 2 is fully approved against BS8484, the British standard for lone worker device services. This enables genuine ‘red alert’ situations to be escalated to the police one level above 999 calls where appropriate.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) definition of a lone worker is those who work by themselves without close or direct supervision.

Next month Connexion2 will be celebrating its 10th anniversary.

They are hosting The Great Connexion 2 Bake Off and Cake Sale.

It is being held at the office in Carrera Court, Church Lane, Dinnington on Friday 6th December from 12pm to 4pm.

There will be complimentary tea or coffee served with each slice of cake bought and all the proceeds will be donated to St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield.
