A Worksop man has been punished after he headbutted a woman then kicked her while she lay unconscious on the floor.

Garry Allen, 36, of Woodend, pleaded guilty to assault and assault by beating at Nottingham Crown Court and was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.

The unprovoked attack on the woman happened on September 22 last year.

The victim needed six stitches on her left eye.

She also suffered large bruises to her thighs.

Detective Constable David Nicks, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Allen's behaviour was totally unacceptable.

"I'd like to praise the woman’s bravery in coming forward.

“We know it’s never easy for people to come forward following domestic abuse.

“I hope that other victims of domestic abuse who read this come forward and contact the police.

“If you are experiencing abuse, I would encourage you to contact the police on 101 or local partners who can provide you support and advice.”
