Police officers investigating the crash on the M1 on Sunday night also want to hear from motorists with dash cam footage of the incident or the car involved before it ran out of control.

A white Volkswagen Golf was travelling on the northbound stretch of the motorway near Woodhall – between Junction 30 for Barlborough and 31 for Aston – when the driver is believed to have lost control.

The car left the carriageway and hit a barrier and a number of trees before overturning and coming to rest on its roof.

Two men in the car, aged 20 and 22, died at the scene.

They have not yet been identified by South Yorkshire Police but have been named as Codeye and Tyrone in online tributes left by friends.

South Yorkshire Police said no other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the collision, which closed the motorway for a number of hours.

They want to hear from witnesses to the collision or anyone who remembers seeing the Golf beforehand.

The force said officers are ‘especially keen’ to hear from anyone with dashcam footage of the Golf travelling along the M1 between 7pm and 7.29pm on the night of the tragedy.

South Yorkshire Police said: “Our Serious Collisions Unit is appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage after two men were killed in a collision on the M1 on Sunday evening.

“At 7.29pm, a white Volkswagen Golf was travelling northbound on the M1 between Junction 30 and 31.

“The driver of the Golf is believed to have lost control, causing the car to leave the carriageway and collide with the barrier and several trees before coming to rest on its roof.

“Two men from Sheffield, aged 22 and 20, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

“Both families have now been informed and are being supported by trained officers.

“We are asking any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who witnessed the Golf prior, to get in touch. We are especially keen to hear from anyone with dash cam footage which captured the Golf travelling along the M1 between 7pm and 7.29pm.”

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 873 of April 4.

Any dashcam footage can be emailed to [email protected] with the incident number 873.
