Wave of lead thefts hits Worksop homes

MORE than 20 Worksop homes were targeted by lead thieves over the weekend - and police are warning residents to be vigilant.

Notts Police have say that they received 12 reports of theft of lead flashing from addresses in Worksop over the weekend (Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August) - mainly in the Kilton area.

Bassetlaw County Council also said that around 23 of their council house properties in the Larwood area was also struck by lead thieves.

Two attempted lead thefts were also reported, with the majority of incidents happening in the Kilton area.

In response to the thefts, police officers have been carrying out increased patrols in the most affected areas, particularly at night time.

A Notts Police spokesman said: “The force also has a dedicated Metal Theft Reduction Team, which is working with local metal dealers to identify stolen material and apprehend those responsible.”

“Local residents are advised to mark their lead, and any other external building materials, with SmartWater.”

A local 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of lead theft but was later released without charge.
