South Yorkshire Police are being investigated over the way they responded to concerns for a man the day before he died in a fire in Dinnington.
Officers visited Robert Walton at his home in Meadow Street, on April 7 in response to concerns about his welfare.
The 66-year-old was found dead following a fire at his home the following day.
No-one else was injured in the fire which broke at about 1.30am.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has now begun an investigation.
An IPCC spokesman said: “The investigation will examine the interaction with Mr Walton, how officers dealt with the information they had and whether their decision-making was appropriate in the circumstances.”
