Adrian Lagdon punched his victim four or five times in the back of her head after accusing her of cheating, at their home in Sutton, on October 28, last year.

Later that day he picked up a small hand-held axe and swung it at her legs as she passed, leaving her with a small cut on the shin.

"The next day she initially didn't want to wake up, knowing that the allegations and the arguments would continue," said prosecutor Lucy Jones. "And they did. The defendant subjected her to repeated violence."

Lagdon punched her in the face, cutting her lip and chipping her front tooth, before hitting her on the forehead and digging his fingernails into her neck so she struggled to breathe.

"During that afternoon he punched her several times and threw a glass at her," Ms Jones added.

When she tried to resist as Lagdon pulled her towards him by the hair, he bit her fingers.

The woman eventually escaped through a window, as all the doors were locked, and called police from her mum's house.

In a statement she said: "I have had enough of being controlled by this man and I want him out of my life."

Nottingham Crown Court heard he has 22 previous convictions, including assaults in 2002 and 2006, and conspiracy to supply Class A drugs, for which he received 66 months in 2008.

In 2018 he was convicted of battery against a woman and, in June 2019, he breached a domestic violence protection order.

Chris Brewin, mitigating, said Lagdon had clearly expressed his remorse and pleaded guilty.

"There are no diagnosed mental health problems but there is a suggestion he may have suffered trauma from the discovery of a murder when he was very young,” he said.

"He was on a downward spiral at the time and was abusing heroin."

Lagdon, 36, of Dalestorth Road, Sutton, pleaded guilty to two assaults and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Recorder Stuart Sprawson sentenced Lagdon to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years, and imposed a restraining order until further notice, banning him from all contact with his former partner.
