The force is adopting an approach of engaging with people, explaining and encouraging them to follow the government guidelines and only use enforcement as a last resort.

Assistant Chief Constable Kate Meynell, who is leading Nottinghamshire Police’s response to Coronavirus said: “I am really pleased to report that due to a combination of our considered approach to the new laws and compliance from the public, we saw no reason to enforce the new powers over the weekend.

“Our Neighbourhood Policing Teams have engaged with those who were out and about and we were really pleased with the positive response from the public.”

“Obviously, we can’t be everywhere at once and we acknowledge that some members of the public have expressed their concerns on social media.

“We welcome these reports and will do everything in our power to ensure their concerns are addressed. This is an extraordinary situation and the response from the majority of the public has been nothing short of phenomenal.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we police by consent and will only use these enforcement measures as a last resort.

“We need to remember why we are doing this. We need to stay at home, protect our NHS and save lives. Our decisions we make right now will contribute to cutting the spread of the disease and I hope everyone continues to take these measures seriously.”
