Bassetlaw fly-tippers foiled by residents armed with cameras

Craig Tinker, 31, was seen dumping five car tyres in a farmer’s field off Great North Road, Tuxford, in January last year and two lorry tyres off Doncaster Road, Costhorpe, in April.

David Hughes and two accomplices were spotted offloading two fridge freezers, two mattresses and a table in February.

Hughes’ crimes came to light after a member of the public photographed him dumping the items - catching his vehicle registration plate in the picture.

The pair were made to pay over £2,800 in fines and court costs after admitting fly-tipping at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court.

A spokesman for Bassetlaw District Council told how photos, information and evidence from members of the public played a crucial part in catching the duo.

Councillor Julie Leigh said: “It would not have been possible for the council to secure these prosecutions without the vital evidence supplied.

“I would like to thank the residents for being so proactive and helping the council combat fly-tipping.

“These cases highlights the invaluable role that residents can play to ensure that fly-tippers are held to account.”

Tinker, of North Anston, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court in November - he was fined £1,066, ordered to pay costs of £1,000 and a victim surcharge of £53.

Hughes, of Cheapside, Worksop, admitted the same charge at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court in December - he was fined £200 and ordered to pay costs of £500 and a £30 victim surcharge.
