Arsonists wreak havoc across South Yorkshire on Bonfire Night

A firework was pushed through the letter box of a flat and another damaged a car last night, South Yorkshire firefighters have revealed.

The incidents were among dozens crews across the county were alerted to on Bonfire Night - traditionally the busiest night of the year for the county’s fire service.

Crews were called to a flat on Plowright Mount, Gleadless Valley, Sheffield, after a firework was lit and pushed through the letter box - damaging the hallway floor.

There was nobody in the property at the time.

They were also called to Lifford Street, Tinsley, Sheffield, when a car was damaged by a firework.

The night before firefighters had fireworks hurled at them as they dealt with a bin and car fire on the same street.

A JCB tractor at a company on Blackburn Road, Wincobank, Sheffield, was torched in an arson attack last night along with a car on Toad Lane, Brampton-en-le-Morthen, Rotherham; a Vauxhall Astra on Drummond Road, Parson Cross; a motorbike on Priory Road, Lundwood, Barnsley and a car on King Avenue, Rossington, Doncaster.

Firefighters were also alerted to bins on fire across Sheffield, with blazes reported on Martin Street, Upperthorpe; Norborough Road, Tinsley; Fitzalan Road, Handsworth and Constable Road, Gleadless Valley.

Rubbish was found alight across Rotherham, with crews sent to Rawmarsh Road, Northfield; Doncaster Road, Dalton and Wath Road, Mexborough.

A grit bin was also set aloght on Birley Spa Lane, Hackenthorpe, Sheffield.

Firefighters attended 57 incidents between 6pm on Thursday and 6am today.
