Prosecuting solicitor, John Cooper, said: “The complainant has been in a relationship with the defendant for five years and she said it has been mostly good with rocky periods.”
“She said he can be jealous and accuses her of having an affair and he takes amphetamines.”
Mr Cooper explained that the complainant had returned from a shopping trip when she discovered the defendant on her sofa and he followed her into the kitchen where he asked her to get him a sandwich.
But when she asked why he did not make her a sandwich, according to Mr Cooper, the defendant started swearing and threw a microwave and it landed on her foot and as he slammed his hand down on the kitchen top he also caught the complainant’s hand.
The complainant said Newton was calling her names, according to Mr Cooper, and she went to her mother’s house to tell her what had happened.
The court heard how when the complainant returned home she saw Newton riding away on a mountain bike but he returned later on and he was arrested.
Newton pleaded guilty to assault and damaging a microwave oven after the incident on 20th March.
Defence solicitor Felicity Clarke said there was no disputing the complainant’s account of events and requested a probation report.
Magistrates adjourned the case to consider a probation report before sentencing on 15th April.
Newton was released on conditional bail on the grounds he does not go to the complainant’s address and does not contact the complainant.
