Council refutes disciplinary action over flag row

BASSETLAW Council has hit back over claims made in a national newspaper about the conduct of one of its employees.

The Sun reported one of the council’s officers had been handed disciplinary papers alleging ‘gross misconduct’ for lowering the town flag in respect of six British soldiers who died in Afghanistan.

But the authority has refuted the allegations the worker’s job was in jeopardy and states no employee has been disciplined in relation to this incident.

The Guardian has received letters of disgust and outrage at the authority following Saturday’s story.

A statement from the council said: “Following a story in the Sun Newspaper on Saturday 24th March, Bassetlaw Council can confirm that no employees have been disciplined or suspended from the authority in relation to this matter.”

“The officer referred to in the article remains at work and is undertaking their full range of normal duties.”
