COMMUNITY: Whitwell - Local History Group

On March 15, members were invited to take 'a favourite item' and it was a surprise to find that members had hobbies which their friends were unaware of. Water divining was demonstrated with some success, and a 1953 AA book for Scotland showed roads with 'passing places' as wide roads were still rare. A christening gown, first worn in 1909 , is still brought out for family baptisms, and the strains of the Blue Danube filled the room when a member brought in an old wind up gramophone playing a 78rpm record. Clockwork toys, a painting and a dolls house made by Susan's father in 1948, and furnished by her mother, are toys still played with by todays children.

John Taylor will present a talk on Sutton Scarsdale on March 22.
