COMMUNITY: Carlton WI

Every year seems to be a special year and this year is no exception; it is of course the Queen's 90th birthday and to mark the occasion a national litter clearance campaign has been launched in an effort to rid our towns and villages of rubbish. We live in a beautiful village on a beautiful island but we are plagued by the thoughtlessness and carelessness of those few individuals who have difficulty in understanding the use of litter bins and dustbins '“ for them the roadside is just somewhere to throw the empty drinks cans and takeaway cartons. These anti-social idiots have no regard for the damage they do to wildlife and they certainly think nothing of the cost of clearing up their mess or what visitors to our country must think of us. The Keep Britain Tidy Campaign was launched by the Women's Institute back in the 1950's and the message is if anything, more important today than it was then. Carlton W.I. have decided to tackle the litter problem along the roads and lanes of the village and on June 13 will split into several groups and help get Carlton 'cleaned up for the Queen'

2016 is already almost three months old, the group’s calendar is filling with both local and county-wide events and they have plenty of activities to anticipate. The group meet regularly with members of other Nottinghamshire W.I’s and in May several Carlton members will join up with our friends for a welcome walk and lunch at Sutton-on-Trent; these walks are always delightful occasions (especially if it’s a dry day) and it is a good opportunity to see different parts of the county that you might otherwise just pass through in the car. Other forthcoming events vary from a day at the Open Nottinghamshire Tennis Trust for the men’s quarter finals, a literary lunch at Rainworth with novelist Margaret Dickinson as guest speaker or a jazz evening at Southwell Minster.

March’s meeting at the Parish Centre on Long Lane will see the election of a new committee and April’s will feature a talk on the work of the RNLI. Our walking group continue to meet weekly for a natter and stroll, the luncheon club will next dine at the Angel in Blyth in April, the gardening group meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Anne Daniels Centre, the darts group on Mondays at the Sherwood Ranger and the swimmers meet each Wednesday.
