Clowne man attacked fiancé

Tiffany Neep got out of a taxi in Clune Street following a night out with friends and was confronted with abuse from Wayne Phillips, Chesterfield Magistrates Court heard.

She ran to a friend’s house in East Street, but he followed, grabbed her arms from behind and pushed her into the road, causing her to graze both elbows.

Ms Neep got up and ran away and a resident persuaded Phillips to leave.

Phillips, 27, of Rose Avenue, Clowne, was later arrested and told police their one-year relationship was ‘rocky’ as they suspected each other of having an affair.

Ms Neep said that she was scared of him and wanted him to leave her alone.

Phillips admitted the 23rd July assault and breaching a two-year conditional discharge imposed last September for assaulting a neighbour. He had a previous conviction for assaulting a former partner.

Denney Lau, defending, said drink played a big part in the offence. An argument broke out in the street and he regretted the assault.

“They were engaged but the relationship has come to an end. He has no need to contact her and it is unlikely they will get back together or meet,” he said.

“He has an underlying issue from the past and he has been drinking to try and overcome it.”

Presiding magistrate Paul Beard jailed him for 12-weeks, but suspended it for 18 months.

He gave Phillips an 18-month probation supervision order, including domestic violence and alcohol treatment programmes.

Phillips also received a five-year restraining order, banning him from contacting Ms Neep, and must pay her £150 compensation.
