Clowne, Creswell and Whitwell: Police send out fraud warning

Bank account fraud often takes place as a result of identity theft when cards or bank account information has been stolen from the victim. The fraudster will then use this information to access the victim’s bank account and pay for transactions using the stolen details.

Detective Inspector Rob King, Head of the Derbyshire Constabulary Economic Crime Unit, said: “Fraudsters are finding new ways to target their victims and they are often unaware that they have fallen victim to this until they notice transactions showing up on their bank statement which they have not made themselves.”

“We would like to encourage people to take steps to better protect their details from these criminals by following some simple yet effective crime prevention advice.”

“Firstly, it is important to regularly check your statements carefully and notify your bank immediately if you see any unusual activity on your account.”

“Secondly, don’t leave things like bills lying around for others to look at and always make sure that any documents containing your name, address or financial details are shredded before being discarded.”

“Finally, get regular copies of your credit report and it you are expecting a bank or credit card statement which doesn’t arrive, contact the financial institution involved.”

Officers are working alongside Get Safe Online to raise awareness of the importance of increasing security and protecting personal details to prevent fraudsters from accessing accounts.”
