Derbyshire County Council has reassured residents that it is ready for the adverse weather conditions, with 15 new gritter lorries now ready to be used.

Coun Dean Collins, deputy cabinet member for jobs, economy and transport, said: “We’ve got plenty of grit in and we’ve just taken delivery of 15 new gritter lorries to replace 15 that are at the end of their lives.”

“We know how important it is to keep the county moving. Problems on the roads can lead to supplies arriving late, deliveries to customers not being made and staff being unable to get to work because of travel difficulties or childcare issues when schools close.”

Residents can get the latest information on gritting routes and live updates from gritters on the council website.

Mr Collins added: “By providing 24-hour cover, we can respond to weather conditions as and when needed using our fleet of specialist gritters.”

“We treat around 1,595 miles of roads − that’s around half the roads we look after which is more than most councils.”
