Clowne and Whitwell: Mark valuable property, warn police

Residents of Bolsover are being encouraged to record their property to help police trace items which have been stolen.

Police are urging people of Whitwell, Clowne and Creswell to make a note of any serial numbers, colour, unique markings and if possible to take photos of any valuable items that are expensive or not easily replaceable.

The advice comes as officers tend to see reports of shed burglaries increase during the spring.

Community safety inspector Russell Dakin said: “Keeping a record of the valuable items you own is good practice, not just for things you store in the shed, but also for items in the home.” “It means that, if you suffered from a burglary, officers can not only return your valuables if they are recovered, but they can also make enquiries into where your property might be.”

“Many people don’t realise the value of property stored in sheds and garages until it is stolen, especially with high value equipment, power tools and cycles or even off road motorbikes.”

“Please consider security marking these items and also make sure that your shed or outbuilding has an adequate lock and is kept secure.”

National property registers include Immobilise and Bike Register which can be used by police officers across the country to trace the owners of any property they recover.
