Chosen ones!

The torch will be displayed through East Markham and Tuxford on its 8,000-mile journey through the UK before arriving at the opening ceremony of the Games on 27th July.

Charity workers, a disabled swimmer and an athletics coach are among those from Worksop chosen to carry the eternal flame this summer.

They will each carry the torch, which weighs 800 grams and is 80 cms high, for 300 meters.

It will arrive in East Markham on the morning of Thursday 28th June just after 9am and will travel along Askham Road, High Street, Hall Lane before making its way to Tuxford, before being displayed on Markham Road, Eldon Street and a short distance on the A6075.

It will then go to Kirton, Boughton, Edwinstowe and carry on to Mansfield before making its way around the rest of the county.

Coun John Cottee, cabinet member for culture and community at Notts County Council hopes people will turn out to celebrate this historic event.

“It will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our local communities across Notts to see the Olympic flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay,” he said.

Each torchbearer, who were nominated by their communities, will wear a white and gold uniform.

One of the torchbearers is 15-year-old Zena Robinson, who will be among the first people from Notts to run with the Olympic Torch when she takes to the streets of Rotherham on Tuesday 26th June.

Zena, from Keswick Road, Worksop, suffers from an extremely rare medical condition and has overcome adversity to become a successful swimmer and currently attends the Nova Centurion County Disability Swim Squad.

Her mum Amanda said: “It’s a chance of a lifetime.”

“We’ll all be there cheering her on and I couldn’t be more proud.”

And Bircotes’ James Needham, 28, will be making his own history by becoming the third member of his family to carry the Olympic Torch when he takes on part of the Doncaster leg on 26th June.

Other Worksop torchbearers include Tony Eaton, 58, who will be carrying it in Conisbrough, Keeley Shaw, 17, in Boughton, Matt Chambers, 41, in Edwinstowe, Michele Harrop, 44, in Bolsover and Lee Hale, 41, in Saxmundham. Tuxford: Ben Gibbon, 25, from Lincoln. Jade Phillips, 19, from Retford. Jason Hazard, 24, from Retford. Rachael Bown, 29, from Nottingham.

East Markham: Alison Noble, 44, from Retford. Dave Young, 15, from Louth. Georgia Zadins, 12, from Selston.
