The force needs to recruit 500 new police officers by the end of 2019, with the first phase of recruitment - for 112 new bobbies - set to begin next month.

Online registration opens on Tuesday, March 1 at 9.30am and closes at 11.59pm on Thursday, March 3.

Hundreds of police officers are set for retirement over the next few years after clocking up 30 years’ service.

Chief Constable David Crompton said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time as an officer on the frontline. In some ways, the role has changed significantly since my days as a PC but at the heart, the aims are the same; to tackle criminality and provide a safe South Yorkshire for us all to live in.

“There are many policing challenges at the moment, both nationally and locally, but we want to ensure that South Yorkshire Police is in the strongest position possible for the future. We are therefore looking for the best candidates who share our commitment to serve our communities. If that is you, we look forward to hearing from you.”

To be considered applicants must be aged between 18 and 55 years old and hold a valid UK driving licence.

After online registration, an application form will need to be completed, there will be an assessment centre and a variety of medical and fitness tests will be carried out.
