John Mann MP today questioned George Eustice MP on why his department is refusing to allow the makers of stilton cheese using traditional methods from calling their cheese stilton.

The Bassetlaw constituency is home to a large herd of cattle who’s milk is used to make the traditional cheese in Bassetlaw which is then sold at shops throughout the UK including the famous Neal’s yard in Borough Market.

John Mann MP said: “Ministers today tried to wriggle out of acting on this issue and protecting these traditional chees makers.

“The minister even made the unprecedented offer of a seat on a government trade mission with her to China to promote the cheese but I’m more concerned about getting a traditional stilton cheese around the cabinet table at Christmas.

“I will be bringing down a traditionally made stilton before Christmas for the cabinet to enjoy.

“I’ve tabled a parliamentary Early Day Motion on this topic as its time for DEFRA to act and stick up for English cheese makers.”
