Check before you park - new officers on beat

MOTORISTS are advised to check for signs and lines when they park, as Lincolnshire County Council takes on parking enforcement powers in the autumn.

Around 20 civil enforcement officers will work across the county enforcing on street traffic restrictions like double and single yellow lines, kerb markings and limited waiting times in parking bays.

They will issue penalty charge notices to drivers who break the parking rules.

But the council said a ‘sensible approach’ would be taken to help tackle local problems caused by motorists parking where they should not.

Motorists who stick to the signs and lines on the roads have absolutely nothing to worry about,” said Coun William Webb, portfolio holder for highways and transportation.

“We want to do all we can to keep traffic moving safely around the county, helping to reduce congestion and supporting local shops that have restricted parking bays outside.”

Lincolnshire Police will still deal with traffic offences that carry penalty points, for example some obstructions and moving traffic offences.

They will also still take action where security or other traffic policing issues are in breach.

Councillor Webb added: “Once approval has been received from the Department for Transport, we will take over responsibility for on-street parking enforcement from the police, in line with government guidance.”

“The hope is for the scheme to be self-funding, it’s not about making money. Indeed it will most certainly not be a profit-making venture.”
