Charity nighthelps families

More than £600 has been raised for the children of two Langold men who died earlier this year.

Friends and family of Daniel Smith and Kevin Fagan showed their support by pulling wax strips off two daring local lads at a charity night in the village.

The evening, held at The Legion on Doncaster Road, saw friends Nick Smith and David Matthewman test their nerves as the crowd donated to wax their bodies.

Nick, 49, from Langold, said he had to have a drink to steady himself.

“It didn’t hurt as much as I was expecting it to,” he said.

“It was very well attended, there were around 200 people there. We’re still collecting money now, but we’re hoping to get around £600. We are getting a lot of people come up and thanking us – half of them think we’re mad!”

He added: “I know Danny’s family quite well and worked with him on the railway. I’ve known him since he was born. It was a tragic death.”

Father-of-two Daniel was driving home from work in June when his van collided head-on with a transit van, travelling in the opposite direction. He died aged 27.

His fiancée Vicki Johnston, from Knott End, remains in shock almost six months on.

“I’m lost, empty,” she said.

Vicki was not up to attending the charity evening but said it was a ‘lovely gesture’.

She added: “My sister went on my behalf and I sent a text apologising for my absence.”

“I am overwhelmed by the support we have received by the community. As a family we are so thankful and grateful for their efforts.”

Father-of-three Kevin Fagan passed away, aged 30, after a tragic accident in late September.
