Chance to apply to become a magistrate

A search is underway to find new magistrates in Lincolnshire.

Lincolnshire Magistrates have a small number of vacancies for new additions to start sitting in 2018.

It is intended to ensure benches reflect their local community by encouraging applications from under-represented groups, from committed individuals possessing the qualities to become magistrates.

Applications are welcome from anyone between the ages of 18 and 65, although applications are particularly encouraged from members of groups that are under-represented on the bench which are those under the age of 35, those in paid employment and those from ethnic minority groups.

The deputy secretary of the The Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Justices of the Peace for Lincolnshire, Mark Chamberlain, said: “The advisory committee is looking for ordinary members of the community to undertake this important public service.

“Magistrates are not paid for their work but can recover their expenses. Applicants do not need any qualifications but must be of good character and trustworthy.

“They must be willing to sit at least 13 days a year and to attend training for their work.

“Magistrates come from all walks of life and applications are welcome from anybody who can demonstrate the key qualities required for this judicial role.

“The committee particularly encourages applications from those groups under-represented on the bench – younger people, those in paid employment, people with disabilities and members of minority ethnic groups.
