Cat ban for pet owner

MAGGOTS had eaten a ‘fist-sized’ hole in a cat that had been neglected by its owner, a court was told.

A jail sentence hangs over Cuckney woman Joanne Hirst, who has been banned from keeping cats for seven years for the offence.

Hirst, of Maltkiln Road, Cuckney, denied charges of failing to ensure the welfare of a cat and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal between 26th April and 15th May.

She was convicted following a trial into the offences, which took place while she lived at an address in Oakwood Way, Mastin Moor.

Presiding magistrate Paul Beard jailed her for 12 weeks but suspended it for a year and imposed a one-year probation supervision order and an 8pm-7am curfew for 12 weeks, with £1021 costs. Hirst’s two cats will be rehomed but she can keep her dog.
