Launched on International Midwives Day (5th May), the award is set to recognise the outstanding support provided by local midwives to parents in the Bassetlaw area.

Bassetlaw NCT and Bassetlaw Hospital head of midwifery Deirdre Fowler came up with the annual awards scheme to celebrate the hard work of local midwives.

Bassetlaw NCT branch chairman Kay Piearcey said she is thrilled to launch the award and urged people to enter.

“All too often we hear parents talking about the great support they have received from local midwives – either the pre and postnatal care mums receive from community based midwives or the great care they receive in hospital during their labour and birth,” she said.

“We wanted to do something to give public recognition to that work and want to encourage parents across Bassetlaw to nominate any midwives they feel might be deserving of this award.”

Deirdre Fowler, Head of Midwifery at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust, said she was delighted to be working with the NCT to recognise ‘exemplary practice’.

“This award is a very special one as nominations come from our service users and will be testament to the very hard work of the midwifery team,” she said.

“On a daily basis midwives demonstrate the values and behaviours of care ,compassion, commitment, courage, competence and good communication and this award marks their contribution to a wonderful period in a woman and her family’s life.”

She added: “My thanks to the NCT for recognising this.”
