Cash help to commemorate Great War

Towns and villages across the county can claim up to £300 to help them commemorate the Great War in their local area.

Earlier this year the County Council approved grant aid funding to support local groups bring the history of the 1914 – 18 War to life and help people understand how the war impacted on their community.

Among the community events already held include a multi-media presentation telling the story of the Great War through song and poetry, a photographic exhibition, trips to the Imperial War Museum and the Cenotaph, an evening of letter readings from the frontline and schools working closely with local history societies to look at the effect of the War on local people.

Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council Alan Rhodes said: “We have just experienced the emotion of Remembrance Day and watched the whole country showing their heartfelt appreciation to those who have lost their lives in all conflicts during the last 100 years.

“It is important that people never forget the sacrifices and bravery displayed by so many men and women from Nottinghamshire, particularly the 13,000 who lost their lives as a result of the Great War.“

Applications are welcomed from historical societies, parish councils, schools, uniformed groups such as cadets, scouts and guides, youth clubs, church groups and art societies. All applications must be supported by the group’s county councillor.

Among the activities eligible for funding are:

Theatre productions

Educational visits to a UK based exhibition, museum or memorial

Film shows/concerts

Re-enactments

Local art exhibitions

War memorial research and restoration

Talks and demonstrations

Poetry competitions

And Deputy Leader Joyce Bosnjak added: “One of the main aims of the fund is that activities will bring communities together and highlight the social and economic change of the times.”
