Cash-back for real nappies

To promote Real Nappy Week next week (from Monday 16th April), parents and carers across the county can claim back per household if they spend £50 or more on real nappies.

The scheme is being supported by Notts County Council and Veolia Environmental Services.

“It’s estimated that some eight million disposable nappies are thrown away everyday across the UK,” said Notts’ cabinet member for environment and sustainability Coun Richard Butler.

“They can’t be recycled, and using real nappies is one valuable way we can cut down on the amount of waste going to our landfill sites across the county which are rapidly filling up.”

He added: “Modern real nappies are surprisingly easy to use and wash and could save you up to £500 from the birth of a child to potty training -- one compelling reason to think about using them even if you’re not particularly environmentally conscious.”

The council say that it costs taxpayers across Notts about £100 to dispose of every tonne of rubbish which ends up at landfill.

It’s also estimated that before a child is potty-trained, they use nearly 6,000 nappies – weighing in at approximately one tonne a time.

Real nappies cost as little as £2 each and around £1 per week to wash at home.
