Boozed-up driver crashed sister's car after eight-hour drinking spree in Mansfield

Daniel Parnill lost control of the “borrowed” MG ZR in the early hours of March 5, at a sharp right turn on Dawgates Lane, Skegby, and ended up in a ditch, said Ruth Snodin, prosecuting.

He later surrendered to police, where a breath test revealed he had 55 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Parnill, 27, of Baker Lane, admitted drink driving, aggravated vehicle taking and driving without insurance, at Mansfield Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The court heard he had previous convictions for failing to stop after an accident and driving with no insurance in April 2016, and common assault in 2010.

Parnill turned up at his sister’s house at 3am planning to sleep on the sofa after a drinking session in Mansfield, from 6.30pm to 2am, said Ms Snodin.

He saw the car keys and decided to drive the 14 miles home, but crashed after one mile.

Sarah Neale, mitigating, said: “He has been extremely candid. His sister bought the car for £350 and he has already given her £200 and intends to pay back the rest.”

She said Parnill, a machine operator who works anti-social hours, might lose his job.

He was given a 12 month community order, with 150 hours of unpaid work, and banned for 15 months, but was offered a rehabilitation course which could reduce the disqualification.

He must pay £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
