Blyth: Shop raid was ‘mindless’ says councillor

Police are investigating after a stolen JCB was used to raid the Co-op store on High Street at around 3.30am on 9th December.

The offenders made off with a safe in a Toyota Hilux and the JCB was left abandoned at the scene.

“It is mindless,” Barry Bowles said.

“My biggest concern is for the local people who are now without their shop and post office, especially before Christmas.”

“Where will they go now ? Worksop ? Bawtry ? I don’t know.”

Mr Bowles told the Guardian that the shop is always busy and is particularly used by pensioners for their weekly shop.

“They don’t know how long it is going to be closed for,” he added.

“We are hoping to have some talks later this week to see if there is any other alternative arrangements we can make.”

“I feel for the people in the shop.”

“I was just in the shop on Monday night, it was a bit of a shock.”
