Blyth sends out a DIY SOS

A FAMILY from Blyth are having their house renovated thanks to the team from DIY SOS.

The Smith’s home was taken over by Nick Knowles and the crew from the BBC1 primetime programme on Monday.

They will be in their Retford Road home for two weeks before the family can go back in for a glimpse of what they have done.

Until then, the work they are doing remains top secret to make sure it is a surprise.

“Its going really well and we have had a great turnout from local traders,” said the show’s presenter Nick Knowles.

“Everyone here knows their stuff and they just turn up and get on with it.”

All the tradesman working on the project are donating their materials and time for free - something which never fails to impress Nick.

“In the current financial climate, the fact that these guys come along and give up nine days of their time for free is absolutely amazing,” he said. “These builds make a huge difference to the families involved - as it will to this family.”

“Sometimes people just find themselves in difficult situations through no fault of their own.”

And despite having to toil through the hot weather, work on the property is going full steam ahead.

“Everyone is working away and is in really good spirits,” said build manager Mark Millar.

“That they have come along and given up their time for people they don’t even know is outstanding. It shows that builders are great people.”

“We can’t reveal exactly what we are doing in their home, but I can say that it will be a big improvement for them.”

The family were nominated for the show by friends Sarah Agar and Nicola Marshall, and have been overwhelmed by the response.

“We are very humbled by how generous everyone has been in our community and how genuinely pleased for us they seem to be,” said Rebecca Smith.

Their new look home will be revealed to Smiths at the end of next week and the programme will air late in the year.
