Blooming great show

Green-fingered gardening enthusiasts from across the country brought their prized flowers and vegetables to compete in this year’s contest - held at St Anne’s Church Hall in Worksop last weekend.

Society secretary Rowland Savage said he was impressed with the standard of entries this year.

“There were some really fantastic entries in this year’s competition - particularly considering the bad weather we have had this summer,” he said.

“It was a shame to see fewer chrysanthemums entered this year after the bad weather has knocked them back a few weeks. They need plenty of sunshine and we have had too much rain.”

Visitors to the show had the chance to browse an array of stunning flowers and pot plants to tasty vegetables before all entries were judged on Sunday afternoon.

Mr and Mrs B Bevington scooped the top Best in Show prize for their pot plants while Max Walker won the silver medal and Frank Bolsover a bronze trophy for their delightful dahlias.

Morris White won the Premier Vase prize, followed by Ray Cooper and Rowland Savage who won silver and bronze medals respectively for their chrysanthemums.

Getting the top veg votes were Mike Barnsdale who won Most Points in Show for his flowers and vegetables, Ken Scott who won Most Points in Show for his vegetables and Ron Smith who won the Vegetable Society silver award for the Best Exhibit in Vegetables.

Rowland said the society has been running for over 60 years and regularly attracts competitors from all over the country at its annual show.

“There is a really great camaraderie between members and a lovely atmosphere,” he said.

The society meets at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of the month at Manton Athletic Club and regularly hosts talks from special guest speakers.
