Be on alert for bogus roofers

Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards have had reports of two men in a blue or silver van going door to door offering to carry out roofing repairs.

In each case, they have charged for the cost of scaffolding up front and then not returned to do the work.

One of these men was seen wearing a t-shirt with GJ & JJ Dry Roof Repairs written on it.

Sarah Houlton, trading standards manager at the council said: “The incidents happened in the Worksop area, but fortunately, our reports suggest no further money changed hands.”

“Residents should always be extremely cautious of anyone going door-to-door offering to do work and we would strongly advise people never to hand money over if they are approached in this way and not to let the callers into your home.”

“If you do believe they have pointed out a genuine issue with your property and want to proceed with some work, we would always suggest getting other quotes from different companies to compare prices and to establish the extent of work required.”

“We are very keen to hear from anyone else in the Bassetlaw area who has been approached by these people and would urge them to report it to us by contacting the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506.”

The council has also warned residents not to leave doors and windows unlocked or open on warm days after a recent spate of distraction burglaries.
