Bassetlaw: Schools and clubs unite and show their support for TypeOnesie day

St Johns Primary, in Worksop, Creswell Junior, Puddleducks Pre-school and Ranskill Primary, all took part in the event and also held special assemblies, which was held by a children’s paediatrics diabetic nurse .

The aim of the assemblies was to give children knowledge and understanding of Type 1 Diabetes.

Earlier in the year, St Johns Primary School decided to make the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) their chosen charity of the year.

Their choice was inspired by seven-year-old, Andrew Ferrol, who is a pupil at St John’s.

Andrew was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was three-years-old and so far, he has had 15,200 finger pricks, 252 injections and 608 canulla insertions.

Schools and club across the area, including Dukeries Academy for gymnastics and trampolining, which Andrew goes to three times a week, were inspired to join in with the day.

The gymnastics club raised an impressive £110 alone.

Andrew’s mum, Sam Ferrol, said: “St Johns Primary, my husband and I and the Paediatric Diabetes Team at Bassetlaw, are overwhelmed by the amount raised and the support we have received from other schools and clubs.”

“Hopefully this will encourage other schools to take part in this fantastic community event and raise awareness of JDRF and Type 1 diabetes in Education.”

“Type 1 diabetes shouldn’t stop people from doing things and Andrew proves this.”

“A couple of weeks ago he competed at the Withamhill Invitation Gymnastics Competition, in Lincoln.

“He won a Bronze medal on Parallel bars, a bronze medal on floor and a silver medal on Vault.”

“This shows that being Type 1 does not stop him.”

Altogether £801.26 was raised from the TypeOnsie day.

All the money raised will go to the JDRF charity.
