Bassetlaw Museum wins award

Staff at Bassetlaw Museum have been celebrating after winning a ‘Wildlife on Your Doorstep Award’ in the ‘Gardens for Wildlife’ category for their wildflower mini-meadow.

The ‘Green Guardians Awards’, with special guest Bill Oddie, recognised contributions to environmental conservation during 2012.

Bassetlaw Museum’s mini-meadow is situated between a hedge row and a brick wall in the Museum’s Victorian garden.

The meadow began its transformation this spring through to the summer and will continue again this coming spring, encouraging more insects and butterflies.

The Museum was helped by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust who gave the garden team advice and donated seed for the meadow.

The award recognises the outstanding contribution by Bassetlaw Museum education and outreach officer Amy Davy, as well as the adults with special needs group from Worksop Library, for the upkeep and care of the meadow.
The Museum has plans to introduce bird boxes and insect homes into to the garden next year and historical plants in the future in order to attract more wildlife to the meadow.

Portfolio holder for environment and leisure Coun Julie Leigh said: “Bassetlaw Council is committed to improving the local environment and our Museum is leading by example.”

“I am delighted that the team at the museum has been recognised as a local ‘Green Guardian’.”
