Bassetlaw MP speaks out after anti-Semitic abuse made towards colleague Luciana Berger

MP John Mann has called for action over “violent and vitriolic abuse” of colleague Luciana Berger on Twitter.

Mr Mann said fellow Labour MP has suffered anti-Semitic abuse.

A man was jailed for four weeks earlier in October for sending an offensive or obscene message.

Mr Mann raised the issue to the House of Commons and said since the jailing, the abuse has worsened.

He added: “If the medium used were a newspaper, I am quite certain that the House would demand that the editor be dragged to the Bar of the House and forced to explain himself or herself.”

“What advice would you give on how to handle the internet, and specifically Twitter, which is the medium by which this abuse against one of the Members of this House is continuing on a most violent and daily basis?”

Mr Bercow responded to Mann by saying that criminal cases were matters for the police, but that “decent people” would “empathise” with Ms Berger
