Mrs Miller said: “The Government want to protect consumers from potentially harmful content, soaring costs and contracts that don’t meet their needs.”

Under the proposals, companies involved with making these calls will face heavy fines and the threat that call centres will be licensed to act as a deterrent.

“Not only this, but they will also end ‘bill shock’ nightmares for unsuspecting victims of these callers and introduce measures to protect children from indecent online images.

By lowering the threshold for regulators to issue penalties and supporting industry efforts to prevent these callers concealing their numbers, they will make it easier for regulators to act against the companies responsible for making these calls.

Mr Mann, who has campaigned on this issue for several years in Parliament, said, “I welcome this announcement which follows years of campaigning from myself and others.”

“Local people, especially pensioners have expressed their concerns to me when they have told me that too many people are plagued and pressured by these people trying to sell things that they have not asked for and do not need.”
