Bassetlaw: Health volunteers are honoured

The health trust that runs Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospital hosted a celebration luncheon to mark the excellent contribution volunteers make on a daily basis to its services.

Held during National Volunteers’ Week, the luncheon was attended by more than 140 volunteers including representatives from the Royal Voluntary Service (formerly WRVS), Aurora, Trust AM, Montagu Hospital’s Comforts Fund, and the League of Friends of Bassetlaw Hospital as well as those volunteering directly with the hospitals.

This year a new way of helping patients and visitors identify hospital volunteers was launched at the luncheon, with each volunteer being given an eye-catching bright red volunteer lanyard to wear.

Trust chairman Chris Scholey said: “Our 250-strong army of volunteers do a fantastic job enhancing the hospital experience for patients. I commend everyone who has given their time to our hospitals, thank you.”

Volunteers carry out a wide variety of roles that add real value to the services the trust provides at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital in Mexborough. These roles include meeting and greeting, helping on the wards, running coffee shops, and supporting the bereavement services. A new volunteering role that has recently been created is the dining companion and the trust is looking for volunteers interested in helping patients who need support at mealtimes to enjoy their meals.

Volunteering attracts people of all ages and the trust has many younger volunteers helping their local hospitals, gaining valuable experience in a busy environment.

For more information about the dining companion or other volunteer roles contact the voluntary services department on 01302 366666 extension 3610 and ask for Nicki Ramshaw or email [email protected].
