Instead of oils or watercolours, artist Elaine Thompson uses fire.

Elaine produces works on wooden panels, using a technique called pyrography which uses a super-heated wire to burn designs into the wood.

Elaine said: “I spend a lot of time selecting timber panels for my work.”

The grain of the wood suggests the design, which I literally, bring out of the woods. “

“I don’t want to add any additional colour because I think it will detract from the beauty of the grain.”

Using this painstaking method and taking inspiration from each piece of wood means that no two works are the same.

Elaine became a full time artist in 1989 and has been working in wood since 1992.

She has exhibited across the Midlands and has her own gallery.

Out of the Woods will be on show at Bassetlaw Museum on Grove Street in Retford until 4th October.
