Bassetlaw: District Council votes against County Council plans for waste transfer station in Worksop

The district council felt the site was not suitable for such a project and recommended that the county council find an alternative.

However, the proposal was only before the district councillors on a consultation basis and the final decision will still be made by county council planning committee members next month.

The proposal would see around 65,000 tonnes a year of green-bin domestic waste from Bassetlaw and industrial waste, taken to the Worksop site and bulked up before going on to Sheffield for incineration.

Although three new jobs would be created, having the waste station at the proposed site would mean more traffic through Worksop.

Environmental concerns were raised, as were issues over odours and bio-aerosols that could affect Gateford Birds Estate, Rhodesia and Shireoaks, whose parish councils have both registered their opposition to the proposal.

Other fears expressed include that the site would attract vermin and that existing businesses would leave the area if the scheme went ahead.
