Bassetlaw: Daughter aims to raise cash for Motor Neurone Disease in memory of her mum

A Bassetlaw woman is organising a charity ball in aid of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) after her mother passed away recently.

Alison Hochstetter, of Sutton Cum Lound, Retford, is aiming to create awareness at the Ye Olde Bell, Barnby Moor, 7.30pm-1am, on Sunday 3rd May.

“My mother was diagnosed in 2012 and unfortunately lost her battle a few months ago,” Alison said.

“We had very little knowledge about MND and we were not prepared for the outcome. My mum lost her voice which was heartbreaking to see. She had so much she wanted to say yet it was so difficult to get it all out.”

“She lost a lot of weight, could not eat and was eventually fed by a peg tube through her stomach. It was devastating to see her decline so rapidly, losing all of her independence.”

The charity ball will include a raffle and auction.

“Anything from a bottle of wine to a gift voucher or free products would be greatly appreciated,” Alison said.

Motor Neurone Disease is a rare condition that progressively damages parts of the nervous system. This leads to muscle weakness, often with visible wasting.

Motor neurones control important muscle activity, such as gripping, walking, speaking, swallowing and breathing.

“My mum was unable to enjoy the simplest things in life,” Alison added. “What she never lost, was her smile, sense of humour and the company of her grandchildren. She showed true strength and inspiration against this horrible disease.”

“In addition to this, my father passed away two months after my mother. He cared for her for two years and got quite stressed, I really believe he passed away with ‘heart break’ after losing my mother.”

Tickets are priced £50, including a three-course meal and entertainment by the Vinegar Strokes.
