Bassetlaw: Big rise in number of calls to Crimestoppers

Statistics by the crime-fighting charity show that from April to August of this year, Bassetlaw residents made 129 calls to Crimestoppers, up from 67 over the same period last year.

During that time, 17 per cent of calls have resulted in arrests being made.

Across Notts overall, the numbers are also up with 1,350 people calling the charity between April and August, an increase of 43 per cent on the same period previous year.

“As Crimestoppers celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, these results highlight the charity’s continuing influence in the fight against crime, which has been helped by various campaigns and appeals run in Notts, as well as the fantastic response and support of the local community,” said Kiran Dhanda, Notts regional manager for the charity.

“With a 43 per cent increase in actionable information passed on to law enforcement agencies nationally, these encouraging regional results mirror the national picture which is a further indication of the public’s trust in the charity, the value of our guarantee of anonymity and their wish to support us in helping make their communities safer.”

In the past six months, Crimestoppers has passed on almost 50 pieces of useful information to police every week and two people have been charged per week as a result of this information.

More than half of both the useful pieces of information, and those charged, were drug-related and across Notts this year there have been 7,000 drugs arrests and charges, bringing the total since 1988 to over 124,000 and £65 million worth of drugs have also been seized during the year, bringing the total amount over Crimestoppers’ 25 years to £301 million.
