Barlborough: Drivers concerned after road becomes a Christmas ice rink

Concerned motorists have accused Derbyshire County Council of not doing enough to prevent accidents on a dangerous road.

The A619 Worksop Road out of Barlborough was more like an ice rink over Christmas as a number of cars skidded off the tarmac as temperatures dropped close to freezing.

And now drivers are saying the council had not done enough to treat the roads or warn drivers of the icy conditions.

However, the council denied they had done nothing, saying the A619 was one of their main gritting routes over Christmas.

“We hit the ice and spun round and ending up in the hedge on the opposite side of the road,” said one driver.

“Whilst waiting for the police to attend, three other cars went off the road and when we returned around a few hours later to meet the recovery vehicle, yet another car was off the road.”

“This particular spot was lethal but there was no sign of salt or grit on the road and no ice warning signs.”

“In fact, there was no sign of any treatment on the roads on the Derbyshire side at all.”

A council spokesman said: “The A619 at Barlborough is on our primary gritting route and close to our weather station at Whitwell which helps determine when we grit.”

“The A619 was heavily gritted in the evenings of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day when overnight temperatures were forecast to fall below freezing.”
