Is Dave Bassett set for a return to Sheffield?

Bassett, of course, is a legend at Bramall Lane and Carlos Carvalhal isn’t doing too badly at Hillsborough at the minute!

The joke article fooled some and confused others, while some saw straight through it.

But others discussed the likelihood of such a move ever happening in the future. Only one man, Danny Wilson, has ever managed both Steel City clubs and in the age of football tribalism, his record looks set to stand for a few years yet.

Legendary former Sheffield United boss Dave Bassett could be set for a sensational return to the city, as an advisor at rivals Wednesday.

It is understood that Bassett, affectionately known as ‘Harry’ throughout his career, has been approached by Hillsborough officials with a view towards taking up a football advisory role on the club’s board.

Following the relinquishing of the football committee at Sheffield Wednesday it is believed that a Director of Football-type position is being opened up to help Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal and Bassett has been sounded out for the post.

The 71-year old’s-last job in football was at Sheffield United in 2011 as a short-term advisor to Mickey Adams, then manager at Bramall Lane, but he left when Adams was sacked.

Long before that, Bassett had acquired legendary status at United having guided the Blades to two successive promotions and into the top flight in 1990, where they stayed until 1994.

A source close to Bassett said: “Harry is no fool. He know’s it would be a tough decision because of his love for United.”
