Beckingham Bowls Club’s annual presentation evening held in Beckingham Village Hall on 4th October attracted over 50 people.

Chairman Ken Bullivant presented trophies to Gerald West, runner-up in the Isle of Axholme Pensioners’ League over 70s singles, Pam West, John Warburton and George Dodsworth runners-up in the Isle of Axholme Pensioners Triples, Pete Cawthorne, the club singles winner, and Club Pairs winners Bill Bryan and Pete Cawthorne.

Ken also accepted the Isle of Axholme Evening League Singles winner’s shield on behalf of John Foster who was unable to attend.

As usual, the club expressed its appreciation to Shirley Wilson and her helpers for organising and providing an excellent meal.

Shirley thanked everybody for their help and friendship over the many years she has so capably taken care of all the club’s catering, and indicated that this would be the last event she would do, but that she would still be popping down to see everybody.

A most enjoyable evening was rounded off with an eight-round picture quiz which was as keenly contested as many of the bowls matches which took place in a busy and relatively successful season.

The Gainsborough Standard Bowls League team finished a creditable fourth out of 11 in their league, reaching the final of the Kelsey Cup and the semi-final of the Millennium Trophy, but losing in both to Marshalls A.

In the Isle of Axholme Leagues, the Pensioners’ Central team came a good fourth out of eight.

The Pensioners’Northern League team came sixth out of nine.

And the Evening League team finished a disappointing sixth out of seven in their division.

But they also reached the semi-final of the Knockout Cup, only to lose to Haxey.

The extensive work on the green has now been completed by professional turf consultants, and this has been helped by the recent wet and warm weather.

Several members will be keeping their eye in for next season by playing indoors during the winter.
