A1 Housing tenants invited to sit on board

ARE you an A1 Housing tenant and would like to have a say in how your service is run?

The Board of Directors is looking for two tenant members to help make key decisions to improve the services and homes provided by A1.

Heather McMillan is soon to step down from her position on the board after more than six years and said influencing positive change has been a ‘wonderful’ and ‘enriching’ experience.

“I have always disliked other people believing that those who live in second class housing are somehow second class citizens,” she said.

“My aim has always been to overcome that and to change not only these views but also those of people living in social housing and make them realise they are not inferior to others.”

She added: “I have always wanted to empower tenants and give them some sort of responsibility for themselves and their properties.”

“It doesn’t matter where you live - once you shut the gates you need to have pride in your home.”

Heather, who is chairman of the Customer Care Champions panel, said she has been proud of what the board has achieved over the years.

“We have made major inroads in giving individual tenants a real voice in shaping services and making decisions,” she said.

“The complaints procedure has dramatically improved and we have got a great system in place, not only putting right what we do but also making a difference for other tenants.”

The board is looking for a tenant representative for both Worksop and Retford town areas with a strong commitment to improving the quality of life for A1 Housing tenants.

You do not have to be a member of a tenants and residents association but you have to be willing to volunteer your time to attend nine board meetings a year and other occasional events.

You must also be a tenant on one of the A1 housing estates in Worksop (eg. Mantin, Kilton, Larwood and Sandy Lane) and in Retford (eg. Ordsall, Hallcroft, London Road and St Saviours)

Reasonable expenses will be paid and full training will be given.

For an informal discussion or applying for an application form please contact Bernard Coleman Managing Director on 01909 533433.

The closing date for nominations is Monday 6th August 2012.

A1 Housing say if they receive more than one application in addition to the interview a ballot of tenants may be undertaken to choose the best candidate.
